Gauteng could be hit harder in third wave

04 May 2021

Gauteng, is projected to peak at a higher level in the third wave than it did in the second, due to the province’s higher concentration of working-age adults and people with comorbidities, and its relatively low proportion of people who have previously been infected with the disease compared to other provinces.

The Free State and North West could potentially fare worse in the next surge, depending on how individual behaviour and government restrictions affect transmission.

  • Meanwhile Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said the government is on “high alert” for the Covid-19 variant circulating in India. The ministerial advisory committee (MAC) will advise the government on how to handle travel from countries where “variants of concern” were prevalent. Currently, there are no directflights from India and strict containment procedures are in place to minimise the importation of Covid-19.
